Not every cavity needs a drill right away. When decay is caught early, before it breaks through the surface of the enamel, Curodont can help stop it from growing. It’s a quick, gentle treatment done in our office, with no drilling and usually no numbing. Dr. Andrew Awad and our team will look closely at the spot, explain what we see, and tell you honestly whether Curodont makes sense for your tooth.

How Curodont works
Tooth decay starts as a small area where acids from plaque bacteria pull minerals out of the enamel. At first, the surface usually stays intact, but the enamel underneath gets weak and porous. You might see it as a chalky white spot, or we might find it between teeth on an X-ray.
Curodont is a liquid made by vVARDIS, a Swiss dental company. It contains fluoride and a small peptide called P11-4. When we place it on an early spot:
- It soaks into the weak enamel, below the surface.
- The peptide forms a fine support structure inside the spot.
- Minerals from your own saliva settle in around that structure, helping the enamel rebuild from within.
Regular fluoride mostly strengthens the outer layer of enamel. Curodont is designed to reach deeper into an early spot. Studies so far are encouraging, showing it can help stop early spots from growing and help some shrink. Research is still growing, especially long-term studies, and we’ll always tell you what we expect for your tooth.
Who Curodont is for
Curodont may be an option for children, teens, and adults who have:
- Early decay between teeth that shows up on an X-ray but hasn’t reached a hole
- Chalky white (or sometimes light brown) spots caused by decay
- “Watch” spots we’ve been keeping an eye on
- White spot lesions from braces, around brackets during treatment or after the braces come off. Dr. Stephanie Labib, our board-certified orthodontist, and our dental team work in the same office, so we can look at these spots together.
Curodont is not the right choice for:
- Cavities that have already broken through the surface. These usually need a filling.
- White marks that aren’t caused by decay, such as spots from how the enamel formed or from too much fluoride while teeth were developing.
That’s why every Curodont visit starts with an exam. We’ll check what’s causing the spot and whether it’s early enough for Curodont to help.
What to expect at your visit
- Exam and X-rays. We look closely at your teeth and review X-rays to find and check early spots. We’ll show you what we see and talk through your options, from watching the spot, to Curodont, to a filling.
- Cleaning the tooth. We gently clean the surface so the liquid can reach the enamel.
- A quick prep gel. A mild gel sits on the spot for a few seconds, then we rinse it off. This opens the enamel’s tiny pores.
- Applying Curodont. We press a small sponge with the Curodont liquid onto the spot, using cotton rolls to keep it dry.
- Heading home. Please don’t eat, drink, or rinse for 30 minutes.
Most people say it feels a lot like a cleaning or fluoride treatment. The treatment takes just a few minutes per tooth and can often be added to a regular visit, or scheduled as a short separate appointment.
After your visit
- Keep up your routine. Brush twice a day with fluoride toothpaste and clean between your teeth.
- At home: In some cases, we may suggest a fluoride gel to use at home, such as a fluoride toothpaste or gel.
- Follow-up at checkups. The rebuilding happens gradually over the following weeks. At your regular visits, we’ll compare the spot with how it looked before. Changes may not show on X-rays right away, so we mainly watch to make sure it hasn’t grown.
- Honest expectations. Curodont isn’t a filling and isn’t a cosmetic treatment. If a spot keeps growing or breaks through, the tooth may still need a filling. A white spot may look better over time, but it may not fade completely.
Curodont FAQ
Does Curodont hurt?
Most people find it comfortable. There’s no drilling and usually no numbing, because nothing is removed from the tooth.
Is Curodont safe for kids?
Curodont can be used for children as well as adults, with the dentist deciding when it’s appropriate. Many parents like that there’s no drilling. Brushing, flossing, sealants, and regular checkups are still the foundation of kids’ dental health.
How is Curodont different from fluoride?
Fluoride helps protect the outer layer of enamel on healthy teeth. Curodont is used to treat an existing early spot and is designed to soak deeper into it.
Will I still need a filling?
Maybe not, but it depends on the spot and how it responds. We’ll keep an eye on it at your checkups, and if it keeps growing, we’ll talk about next steps.
Does insurance cover Curodont?
Coverage varies by plan. Some plans cover it and some don’t. Our team will check your benefits before treatment so you know what to expect. Financing through CareCredit and Cherry is available.
